Ledgering
Ledgering is a way I like fishing, I don`t catch as many fish as float fishing
but I can get in places that you can`t with a float
___________
I use 2 different s styles of bite indicator
I have the normal ledger rod with 3 tips
and I have a 10 ft very light spinning rod
and to this rod I have fitted a Sidewinder indicator
I find the Sidewinder is very good in strong wind
as you have the tip of the rod under the water
and the wind and waves don`t affect the bite indicator
_____________
For those who have not seen a Sidewinder
it is a small square block with a hole in the corner
you secure the block to the rod with insulation tape.
Into the hole you push one of the 3 different strength tips supplied
then feed your reel line through the wind on eye on the tip
_______________
Casting with a ledger rod is an art of it`s own and takes a lot of practice to get it right
Most people fishing to an island's margins would get their distance right then put the line on the clip.
_______________
The way I find my distance is to cast out on the clip
( The important bit being that the rod must be held vertically after the cast,
then as you feel the line hit the clip very quickly drop your rod tip down level with the water )
That way it stops the weight of the feeder winding the rod tip up
and pulling the feeder back to you 3 or 4 ft
This takes a lot of practice to get the timing right
_______________
When ledgering I think the hook length is most important
Think about it
If you are fishing with a 12" hook length the fish can travel 24"
before it gives you any indication of a bite.
This my be okin the summer when the fish are active
but is certainly too far in the winter when they are hardly moving.
I use a 4" hook length in the winter and maybe 6" in the summer
I use this theory for float fishing as the distance from my bottom shot to my hook
