How I Fish
The first thing I do is set up my landing net.
How often have we seen anglers struggling, having caught a fish straight away or forgotten to set their landing net up.
I set up my chair and all my gear around me all within easy reach
I came across an angler the other week, with his gear spread about like a kids play room
He had to stop fishing and pick it all up before I could pass him
When you are sitting down have a good look around
I did it today
Had an island in front of me with bushes, throwing a dark shadow to about 6 ft from the island
A large tree, its thick trunk also casting a shadow about 2 ft wide and reaching about 12 ft from the bank
Both ideal for a yellow topped float
I decided to fish about 10 ft from the island in the shadow of the tree trunk
this gives me the option of moving closer to the island if necessary
With that I put a small pinch ( about 20 ) micro pellets ( half that in the winter ) right on the spot
I toss them up in the air to make them spread out a bit
and another small pinch in the margins to my right.
I always fish in the margins. We all seem to want to fish the margins of an island but I don`t think the fish know the difference between that and the side of the lake, they are just looking for food.
When setting up my rods I try to do it as far away from the water as possible
Having put loose feed in the margins I like to keep the bank side as quiet as possible.
My rod rests are fixed to the side of my chair as I don't like to go banging bank sticks in with a mallet.
it must sound like a big drum to the fish and will frighten them away for miles around.
